Mark Solms opens his paper “Revision of Drive Theory” (JAPA 69/6, 2021) thus: “Psychoanalytic drive theory is in need of fundamental revision. Many analysts today have not only lost confidence in Freud's classical conception of the drives … but have abandoned drive theory altogether, thereby conflating Freudian drive theory with drive theory per se. The price we pay for this is too great; rather than abandon drive theory, we must revise it” (p. 1033).
Solms's paper is part of a far larger project in which he attempts to bring Freudian concepts and models of mind into meaningful conversation with findings from contemporary neuroscience. We had hoped to publish commentaries on his paper at the time of its publication; a variety of factors prevented this. What follows are two commentaries, by Alan Sugarman and Paul Schwartz, and a response to them by Solms.
