The 2022 JAPA New Author Prize has been jointly awarded to Jennifer Guittard for her paper “When the Good Object Is Also a Thief: A Memoir of Adoption” (70/1, pp. 39-76) and Jamey Hecht for his paper “Bion at the Crossroads: A Contrarian Reading of ‘On Arrogance’” (70/4, pp. 613-636).
Beginning in 2018 Phillip Blumberg and Adrienne Harris began a series of conversations with an international group of psychoanalysts concerning the recently published twelve-volume Collected Works of D. W. Winnicott. Ultimately, they invited these analysts to each submit an essay focusing on a single volume of the collected works. These essays were published in JAPA in sequence over a three-year period during which we were able to witness Winnicott slowly coming to preserve his profound love of Freud while simultaneously establishing his own radical voice and innovations. This award is to be shared with the authors of these essays, all of whom acknowledge with Winnicott that play is an engine of therapeutic action and serves as the generator of an experience that enables both patient and analyst to feel alive, present, and known.
