This volume, edited by Betti, Galiani, and Ruggiero, is a collection of papers resulting from the valuable work of several psychoanalysts on “Psychoanalysis and Public Role” of Società Psicoanalitica Italiana. This group comprises psychoanalysts who actively work in mental health centers within the Italian national health care system. The volume emerges from the proceedings of their meetings, gathers their testimonies and reflections, and offers living accounts of the challenges, emotions, pain, and commitments psychoanalysts encounter within public institutions. The volume does not aim to construct historiographical frameworks but instead seeks to provide firsthand accounts of the shared painful experiences of providing psychoanalytic care in these settings. Although this situation is somewhat foreign to American contemporary psychoanalysis, the review of this book aims to bring some insight into the precarious but necessary role of psychoanalysis in a larger socio-medical environment.
