A provisional diagnostic profile is routinely made on children referred to the Clinic for diagnostic assessment. The general procedure is as follows: following the referral (which can be from the family doctor, school, parents, another clinic, and so on) one of the social workers will interview both parents (if available) and obtain a comprehensive Social History including a Personal History of the child; there will be at least two (usually more) interviews in this connection. The diagnostician allotted to the case will then usually have two diagnostic interviews with the child, and may wish to meet the parents as well. The child is then given an intelligence test and projective tests by one of the Clinic's psychologists: the educational psychologist is a trained child psychologist as well as a therapist or a student in the Course at the Clinic. A school report is requested, as well as other medical or academic reports, if considered necessary. The diagnostician then constructs the Profile on the basis of this diagnostic material (the Profile is described in Anna Freud's book Normality and Pathology in Childhood) and presents it to a Diagnostic Conference. The discussion at this Conference is minuted. A recommendation about treatment or other steps which might be taken is made to the parents, taking into account both the diagnostician's formulations in the Profile and the ensuing discussion at the Diagnostic Conference.
