The provisional diagnostic profile is based on information gained during the interviews with both child and parents at the assessment stage. It is often not possible to answer questions but only to pose them and speculate on what will transpire during treatment. In this case we have the advantage of a description of the first year of treatment, published by S. Smith in this issue of the Bulletin. The diagnostic categories referred to in the Profile are those described by Anna Freud in Normality and Pathology in Childhood.
The profile is based on the following reports and interviews:
Item 1. Telephone call from Mrs Model, Senior Psychiatric Social Worker (PSW) to mother, following mother's informal ‘dropping in’ at the Clinic.
Item 2. Two interviews with mother from which Mrs Model compiled the Social History.
Item 3. Written school report.
Item 4. Psychological tests given and reported on by Miss R. Putzel, Educational Psychologist and Child Psychotherapist.
Item 5. Two interviews with Timothy reported on by Dr Earle, Child Psychiatrist.
The profile was presented at a meeting of staff and students and the Minutes of the discussion, taken by Miss G. Bon, Administrative Secretary, are also published.
Mrs L. came into the clinic and asked for help for her son Timothy, as no social worker was free Mrs Model called mother back.
