A symposium was presented by the Extension Division of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute on April 21 and 22 1979 to raise funds in support of the work of our Course and Clinic. Dr Marshall Greene headed the Committee in charge of the arrangements. The meeting opened with a contribution from Dr Anna Maenchen entitled ‘An Appreciation and Review of Miss Freud's Work’ and was followed by a video-taped presentation of a paper by Anna Freud: ‘Child analysis as the study of mental growth (normal and abnormal)’. There were further contributions on the subject of obsessional and related disorders by members of the Institute and the Child Analysis group in San Francisco. Mrs Marion Burgner, Mrs Hansi Kennedy and Dr Clifford Yorke were the contributors from Hampstead and presented the following papers: ‘A developmental approach to the assessment of obsessional phenomena’, ‘Different types of sadomasochistic behaviour in children: a preliminary report’, and ‘Two clinical case studies’.
During the following week, papers were given and seminars held at the Institute, hospitals and other organisations in the Bay area, and Dr Yorke also represented the Hampstead Clinic in Portland, Oregon, at the invitation of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Association.
A sum in excess of $10,000 was realised, and we are indeed very grateful to all our friends whose hard work and enthusiasm made these visits possible. We have warm memories not only of the professional and scientific exchanges but also of the kind welcome and generous hospitality which we have received from all concerned.
