Dorothy Burlingham died on 20 November 1979, aged 88. Ten days before her death she had still taken an active part in the Hampstead Clinic weekend forum on the significance of insight in psychoanalytic theory and practice.
Of the tributes paid to her during the funeral service at Golders Green Crematorium on 22 November, those by Hansi Kennedy and Clifford Yorke open this memorial issue.
Subsequently, a Memorial Meeting was held at the Hampstead Clinic on 6 February 1980. This issue contains the contributions made on that occassion by Anna Freud, Hansi Kennedy, Ilse Hellman and Doris Wills which cover different facets of her life and work.
We are fortunate to be able to include a brief account by Erik and Joan Erikson of the school set up by Dorothy Burlingham in Vienna and referred to in Anna Freud's contribution.
By kind permission of International Universities Press Inc. we are reprinting Dorothy Burlingham's seminal paper on ‘Psychoanalytic observations of blind children’, dating from 1940. It deals with a topic and issues which were of central interest to Dorothy Burlingham for many decades.
This issue is completed by a comprehensive list of Dorothy Burlingham's publications, both in German and English, and the announcement of a special annual grant in her memory.
Dorothy Burlingham's photograph was taken during the last months of her life and kindly put at our disposal by her grandson, Michael John Burlingham.
