In the previous issue of the Bulletin we published the first of twelve instalments of discussions with Anna Freud on her book The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, held in the Index Department of the Clinic during 1972/3 and chaired by Joseph Sandler. The present issue continues the series with the edited discussions of the second chapter of Anna Freud's book.
These discussions are followed by what we hope will also be the first in a series, namely Anna Freud's replies to written questions submitted to her by staff members or students. The questions and answers contained in this issue arose from a series of seminars which our third year students had with Anna Freud in which they discussed some selected papers of hers. Since one of these questions touches on the subject of primary and primal repression (a subject which also arose in the course of the preceding defence discussions), an editorial comment on these concepts has been appended to this section to clarify their status in Freud's writings.
There follows another in our series of Profiles, written by Marlene Robinson. This is a Terminal Profile on a young adolescent boy who had been in analysis previously with a different therapist. The author, who was the boy's second therapist, evaluates the original Diagnostic Profile (made when the boy was four years old) in the light of the material which emerged during his second analysis.
As in last year's first issue, we again include a list of publications by staff members and students during the preceding year which have come to our notice. Short summaries of the papers are included where supplied. The list does not include those contributions which appeared in Volume 3 of the Bulletin. These can be found in the list of contents of the first three volumes of the Bulletin which concludes the present issue.
