Last November, the second international scientific forum was held at the Hampstead Clinic, again attended by some seventy invited psychoanalysts from many parts of the world. The theme of the first forum had been the significance of insight in psychoanalytic theory and practice, the proceedings of which were published in part 3 of last year's Bulletin.
The topic chosen for the second forum was ‘The superego: its early roots and the road from outer to inner conflict as seen in psychoanalysis’. The procedure adopted was similar to that of the first forum except for a slight shortening of the event to two full days of discussions. The forum again started with a plenary session and the presentation of three introductory papers on the topic, read by Dr Jacob Arlow, Dr Clifford Yorke and Dr Colette Chiland. Since the full texts of these three papers will again be published in a future volume of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, the present account of the proceedings includes only brief summaries of these papers, prepared by three of our students, Mr Steven Marans, Miss Turid Nyhamar and Miss Sarah Rabb.
Our present published account is an edited version of the tape-recorded discussions during the two plenary sessions, including summary reports of the discussions that took place in the four groups which met between the opening and concluding plenary sessions. To help the reader through the various stages of the forum, additional comments (in italics) have again been inserted where appropriate.
The present issue also includes a further instalment of the discussions with Anna Freud on her book The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, held in 1972/3 and chaired by Joseph Sandler. The edited discussions contained in this issue cover the third chapter of Anna Freud's book.
The issue concludes with an obituary notice on Mr G.G. Bunzl contributed by Miss Freud, and an addendum to the 1980 list of publications by staff members and students.
