This section of the Index records physical and psychological aspects of the child's environment which has affected or might affect his psychic functioning. Also recorded is data concerning the child's personal development.
The main sources of information for entries in this section are the Social History, the Diagnostic Interviews, the Psychological Test Report, the Diagnostic Profile, and further interviews with the parents during the child's treatment. Any other records in the child's file may be used for additional information. Circumstances or events reported by a patient in the analytic session can also be used, provided such information has been verified.
The data in this section therefore refers to the child's life before and during treatment but does not include any analytic material.
The Manual for the General Case Material is divided into two subsections comprising the child's Background and his Biographical Data respectively.
All relevant data—both physical and psychological—concerning the patient's family are recorded here under relevant headings. They include information about the constellation of the family; deaths and accidents; the physical and psychological characteristics of the parents; their attitude towards discipline, separations, treatment, etc; the family's ethnic and socio-economic status; illness in the family; the nature of the parents’ relationship to each other and to the patient, as well as that of other family members, etc.
