It gives me great pleasure to include in this issue the announcement of the latest honorary doctorate conferred on Anna Freud. This latest honour is of particular significance since it is the first honorary doctorate awarded to Miss Freud by a German University and at the same time the first doctorate she has received in Philosophy, On behalf of the Editorial Committee and the Staff and Students of the Hampstead Clinic I would like to convey our heartiest congratulations to Miss Freud.
The greater part of the present issue is taken up with the continuation and conclusion of the discussions with Anna Freud of Chapter 4 of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, chaired and edited by Joseph Sandler.
We also continue our series of brief articles on the various sections which make up the Psychoanalytic Index of the Hampstead Clinic. The present article summarizes the section on The Ego, with its separate manuals on general features of ego functioning, reactions to anxiety and defences.
In order to give our readers some idea of the ongoing or recently completed research activities at the Clinic, we have asked the chairmen of the various Study Groups to provide us with summaries of the work done in each of the eight study groups.
The present issue concludes with a brief report by Doris Wills on a recently held symposium on visually handicapped children.
