On 2 November 1981, Miss Freud was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The ceremony was held at the West German Embassy in London.
The citation mentions that this honour was conferred on Miss Anna Freud
in recognition of her many and varied services in advancing the science of psychoanalysis, both in the clinical and in the theoretical realms, but above all because of her scientific research activities in the area of developmental psychology and because of the establishment of an independent psychoanalytical child psychotherapy, including the application of her findings in the fields of education, educational theory and paediatrics.
The laudation was delivered by Professor Hermann Argelander and the scroll presented to Miss Freud by the Dean, Professor Helfried Moosbrugger.
