This issue starts with the sixth instalment of the discussions with Anna Freud of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, chaired and edited by Joseph Sandler. The discussions reported in the present issue cover Chapter 5 of Miss Freud's book.
We also continue our series of articles on the Hampstead Psychoanalytic Index. While the first three short articles gave an introduction to the aims and purposes of the Index and brief summaries of two of the Index Manuals (General Case Material and the Ego), the present issue illustrates the application of the indexing method to actual case material. Susan Vas Dias has selected some representative cards from the indexing of her case Hannah P., a latency girl. It has to be borne in mind that the selection of cards presented here represents only a small fraction of all the cards which go to make up the full indexing of the case. Nevertheless, the cards have been carefully chosen with a view to reflecting the salient features of this girl's pathology.
In line with our policy of presenting past as well as present work carried out at the Clinic—in particular, clinical reports on the treatment of children—we have this time included a clinical paper by Elizabeth Holder describing her analysis of Gay whose struggles to accept her femininity constituted one of the central features of her treatment.
The present issue concludes with the list of publications by our staff members and students during 1981, together with brief summaries, and with a listing of the contents of the first four volumes of the Bulletin.
