The third international scientific forum was held at the Clinic at the end of October last year. The topic was ‘The psychoanalytic approach to the nature and location of pathogenesis’. The forum was attended by some seventy invited psychoanalysts from many parts of the world.
For the first time, two papers dealing with the chosen topic—one by Miss Anna Freud and the other by Dr Jacob Arlow—were pre-circulated to all the participants. This proved to be a welcome innovation, facilitating discussion from the very beginning of the opening plenary session. Only one additional paper was read during the actual forum. This was written by Dr Clifford Yorke in collaboration with colleagues from the Hampstead Clinic.
The edited transcript of the tape-recorded discussions printed in this issue of the Bulletin includes brief summaries of the three papers. (The full texts will appear in a future volume of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child.) Additional comments (in italics) have again been inserted to help the reader through the various stages of the forum.
The present issue also contains a further instalment of the discussions with Anna Freud of her book The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, held in 1972/3 and chaired by Joseph Sandler. The edited discussions contained in this issue cover Chapter Seven of Miss Freud's book which deals with ‘Denial in Fantasy’.
The issue concludes with an addendum to the list of publications by staff members during 1981.
