This issue contains further contributions to three of the Bulletin's regular series. It begins with the eighth instalment of the discussions with Anna Freud of her book The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence which were chaired and edited by Joseph Sandler. The chapter under discussion in the present issue is the seventh in Anna Freud's book, dealing with ‘Denial in Word and Act’.
This is followed by a further contribution in the series on The Hampstead Psychoanalytic Index. It is a summary account of the manual which deals with the indexing of instinctual drive manifestations, as reflected in the treatment of children analysed at our Clinic.
The third contribution in this issue is part of our series on the Diagnostic Profile. It is an Interim Profile on John B. whose original Profile was published in the very first issue of the Bulletin in 1978. The Interim Profile, written jointly by Audrey Gavshon and Marion Burgner, is based on some three and a half years of analytic treatment and includes the reassessment of some of the original diagnostic statements in the light of the treatment material.
The issue concludes with two clinical presentations, both of which follow up earlier reports of analyses published in the Bulletin in 1978. The first paper is by Marie Zaphiriou Woods on the continuation and termination of her treatment of David, a latency boy. The earlier report of his treatment also formed part of the very first issue of the Bulletin in 1978.
The final paper describes the difficulties encountered in the treatment of an adolescent boy, Peter, first reported on by Alex Holder in 1978 (Part 3). The present paper focuses on certain aspects of Peter's pathology which have presented special problems in his analysis.
