We should gradually evolve a technique which fits the child perfectly, whether it is similar to the adult technique or not; but it should fit as well as the classical technique fits the adult. We haven't done so yet. We are nearer to it than we were twenty years ago, or even ten years ago, but we are still quite a long way off.
Certainly it is the function of this Clinic to teach the students child analysis. I wouldn't call it classical child analysis because there never has been anything like a classical child analysis. There is a classical analysis, and the child analysis is a modification of it which takes account of the nature of the child. We are still working at the method of child analysis, to improve it, to complete it. We are still, even with purely neurotic children, uncertain in many areas what the best techniques are, but it is a method which we have built up over the years.
The method of child analysis is aimed very definitely at the child's ego. It tries to show the ego, ‘You've done that wrong, let us try together to do it right,’ not altering the problems, but altering the solution to the problems.
I think I would have answered the question under discussion, ‘Am I proud of myself?’ differently. I think that I would have said, ‘That's a very difficult question, but I think that when I am proud of you and when you like me, you will certainly be proud of yourself.’
