Most of the contributions to this issue are in the nature of a further memorial to Anna Freud. It was her idea and wish to inaugurate an annual Sigmund Freud Lecture at the Clinic, and the foundation for this venture was laid at the Scientific Forum in the autumn of 1981 when an auction raised sufficient funds to plan for the first of these Lectures to take place on Freud's birthday in 1982. However, Anna Freud's illness made a postponement necessary. Although she had hoped to be present when the first Lecture was to be delivered, her death last October meant that we had to hold it, without her presence, on 6 May of this year. Nevertheless, it had been Anna Freud who had invited William Gillespie to inaugurate these Sigmund Freud Lectures. ‘Fifty Years with Freud’; is the topic chosen by Dr Gillespie.
We also resume, in this issue, the discussions with Anna Freud of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, chaired and edited by Joseph Sandler. The present instalment covers the discussion of the chapter on ‘Identification with the Aggressor’.
The third contribution is by one of our graduates, Ivan Sherick, who now works at Ann Arbor. It was originally intended for the Anna Freud Memorial Issue but had to be held over for reasons of space. The paper addresses itself to a very specific and circumscribed aspect of Anna Freud's contributions to the understanding of early child development and the mother's role in it.
Elizabeth Model's profile on the first year of a baby's life in many ways complements Ivan Sherick's paper in that the focus is very much on the interaction between a mother and her baby and on how the mother's attitude affects the baby's reaction patterns and development. This is the first ‘Baby Profile’ to be published in the Bulletin; others are planned for future issues.
