This issue starts with a clinical presentation by one of our former students, Carla Elliott, in which she describes and discusses the difficulties encountered in her analytic work with a severely disturbed four-year-old boy. The paper was originally presented in 1981 at one of our Clinic Conferences. It includes a summary of the discussion following the presentation.
There follows a further instalment of the discussions with Anna Freud of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, chaired and edited by Joseph Sandler. It covers the discussion of the second of Anna Freud's two chapters illustrating two types of defence, entitled ‘A Form of Altruism’.
The final part of this issue is devoted to the presentation of the diagnostic material and Profile, written by Claudia Lament, on an eight-year-old girl who grew up in a rather chaotic family environment. It touches on the important issue of the distinction between a neurotic disturbance and a developmental disharmony caused by parental pathology and the environment in which the girl spent the first eight years of her life.
