The proceedings opened with a plenary session chaired and introduced by Dr Arthur Valenstein.
H. Kennedy: I want to welcome you all most warmly. We are delighted to see so many friends here again, and I want to extend a very special welcome to those who have come for the first time. We apologise for the fact that conditions will be very cramped in the next two days but the staff and students will do their best to make you feel comfortable and at home. I hope we shall have a very successful and enjoyable meeting.
A. Valenstein: Thank you. It is a great pleasure and a privilege to open this meeting and to have with us the Sandlers who have come fresh with thoughts from the Old World and the New. They have brought us a most interesting paper, one that should stimulate much discussion at both the theoretical and the clinical levels. In order to examine fantasy within the context of intrapsychic organization they have thoroughly reviewed—I would say exhaustively reviewed—Freud's meta-psychological formulations of psychic functioning which are schematized in his two constructs of the mind: the early topographical approach, and the later structural model. But they have gone much further than systematizing the correlations and congruencies which are explicit in Freud's theories and the schemata of mental organization. It has been described as a scholastic exercise which encumbers the clinical theory of psychoanalysis, and which even detracts from its scientific standing. However, this presentation by the Sandlers epitomizes for many
