In July 1988 the Association for Child Psychoanalysis, together with the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London under the Directorship of Professor Joseph Sandler, jointly hosted a two-day Conference on Psychoanalytic Insights into Problems of Adoption.
The occasion provided an opportunity for two members of the Anna Freud Centre's Study Group on Adopted Children, Jill Hodges and Frances Salo, to present formal papers to an appreciative and receptive audience. A third paper was given at the Conference by a psychoanalytic colleague from Frankfurt, Elisabeth Miüller, who provided further detailed child analytic material to enrich the discussion. In addition to the formal papers the Conference offered a forum for psychoanalytically trained clinicians to discuss with the many representatives of the Social Services who were present, the legal rights and social policy constraints affecting biological parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and children who have been placed outside their families of origin. We are pleased to be able to publish the formal papers presented at the Conference together with a brief summary of the discussion.
