In early November 1990, the World Association for Infant Psychiatry and Allied Disciplines, together with the Tavistock Centre, and in collaboration with the Anna Freud Centre, held a regional conference in honour of John Bowlby on the theme ‘The Effects of Relationships on Relationships’.
Numerous Centre staff took part in this conference which attracted more than 500 participants. Members of staff conducted numerous workshops, case presentations and discussion papers, and Dr Peter Fonagy gave a plenary paper concerning his work at the Centre carried out in collaboration with Miriam and Howard Steele. A selection of some of the best of these contributions will be published in the next issue of the Bulletin.
In the current issue we include the first research report to emerge from our retrospective study of the case records of over 700 children and adolescents treated at the Centre over the past 40 years. This account focuses on the psychoanalytic treatment of under-fives at the Centre. In the first part of the paper Mary Target reports the preliminary statistical findings of the case records of all the children of 5 and under analysed at the Centre. Hansi Kennedy then discusses some of the implications of the statistics and the issues and questions that these bring up, based on her enormous experience in the treatment and supervision of young children.
