Recently translated form the Spanish, this book examines the origin and nature of unconscious guilt from a psychoanalytic point of view. Drawing on his clinical experience and the theoretical frameworks of Freud and Melanie Klein, Grinberg follows the latter in differentiating two varieties of guilt: persecutory and depressive. In a second part of the book, the stages of mourning and melancholia are revisited. Pathological aspects of mourning are addressed. There are interesting chapters on mourning in children and collective mourning. The final part is a rather fascinating application of psychoanalytic understanding of guilt and mourning to artistic creation, biblical texts and film.
