The need for psychoanalysts throughout the country is becoming most pressing. The following report from Dr. Hyman S. Lippman in St. Paul emphasizes this problem:
“At the present time there are two analysts in this community besides myself, who have been here for two or three years. One is Dr. Alan Challman who is practicing in Minneapolis; and the other is Dr. Marvin Sukov who has a job with the Veterans' Bureau mental hygiene setup, but is also doing psychoanalytic work privately. Neither of these two men is limiting his work to psychoanalysis. Dr. Sukov is doing the work required by the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society so that he can become a member of the Society. Dr. Challman had his analysis in New York before the war. His opportunity for following up his own analysis by special work was interrupted by the war, and he has not been able to continue.
Dr. Adelaide Johnson of Chicago is joining her husband who is director of medical research at the Mayo Clinic. She will be coming in to the Twin Cities at least once a week, and will be a welcome addition to our little group.
Dr. Donald Hastings, who is the head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota, is very anxious to have a full or part time member on the Faculty who is an analyst. I have had several requests for didactic analysis by men who are doing graduate work at the University of Minnesota, but my schedule of work at the Child Guidance Clinic, and my teaching at the University, make it impossible for me to carry on any adult analyses.
Could you, through the Bulletin, help us to interest some well trained analyst who could help to teach in the Department of Psychiatry, and analyze men who are eager to be analyzed as a part of their training? There would be, of course, opportunities for such a person to do private work if he so wished or had the time to do so.
Thank you for anything you can do to help us here in the Twin Cities.”
