In the past, courses of training have been designed to fit the needs of students but the Committee decided that it was better to begin with a training program and then to select those suitable for it.
The following program was drawn up as an optimal one:
It was deemed necessary to plan the course not only to fit the needs of the student but to take into consideration the practical realities of his life, such as time, and the need to earn a living while undergoing training. The program is to be submitted to the Regional Committees to determine whether local conditions require slight modifications in it. It will consist of a five-year course beginning at the same time as the students' theoretical work in his Psychoanalytic Institute. It will require slightly less than one-half of the students' time but is arranged in such a manner as not to interfere with his opportunity to earn a livelihood and to meet the requirements for his work with adults.
Each year's work will be apportioned among lectures and seminars, field and clinical work, and conferences with supervising instructors.
The lectures and seminars and the field and clinical work will be devoted chiefly to study of the normal child.
