Ten years ago, the writer became absorbed in the task of condensing, indexing and cross-indexing the important ideas and clinical observations in psychoanalytic literature. The vastness of this endeavor may well be imagined. Begun in 1940, it has included the works of Freud, Ferenczi, Abraham, Jones, Alexander, Anna Freud, Glover and many others, not only in the form of papers but also in the more extensive volumes of their publications. In addition, the index includes at present the important ideas and clinical cases from the first 15 volumes of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly and the first 25 volumes of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. These ideas have been indexed and cross-indexed under 280 headings which have been found adequate to comprehend the main subjects and mechanisms discussed in psychoanalytic literature. Examples of such headings are, Abreaction, Abstinence, Adler, Affect, Aggression, Agriculture, Alcoholism, Allergy, Ambivalence, etc. Subsumed under some of these headings, there may be as many as 4,000 page references. For example, so many references to CHILD are available in the literature that for the purpose of ready accessibility to the references, it was necessary to subdivide under another 300 subheadings the 4,000 or more ideas of Child Psychology. This indicates that each of several of the 280 headings above mentioned would include in itself enough to comprise an entire volume. The total work at present amounts to 15 loose leaf volumes with about 30 page references to a page or approximately 150,000 page references altogether. It is safe to say that it represents the essences of approximately 40,000 pages of psychoanalytic literature.
Why is this work not published, and made available to all persons interested in psychoanalysis? This question is asked again and again. The answer is that the cost of publishing this work would be at least $30,000 and hence would have to be accomplished by a subscription or by a Foundation, o
