To the Editor:
“I would like to call the attention of the membership to an important error in the printing or translation to be found in THE PROBLEM OF ANXIETY, of Sigmund Freud, published by the Psychoanalytic Quarterly Press and W. W. Norton, in 1936.
On page 110, under the heading (c) Repression and Defense, it is stated:
‘I now think that it confers a distinct disadvantage to readopt the old concept of defense if in doing so it is laid down that this shall be the general designation for all the techniques of which the ego makes use in the conflicts which potentially lead to neurosis, while repression is the term reserved for one particular method of defense, one which because of the direction that our investigations took was the first with which we became acquainted.’
Therefore, the sentence should read:
‘I now think that it confers a distinct advantage, … etc.’
