It should be stated at the outset that my paper is not a formalized committee report but represents my personal response to the invitation to study the committee deliberations. The record of the curriculum subcommittee of COPE comprises some 55 documents consisting of letters, minutes, conference reports, and published papers. I have tried to approach my review of this material from the stance of an educator as well as a psychoanalyst, and will accordingly address my comments to some aspects that psychoanalysis shares with other formalized educational endeavors as well as some of its unique aspects. I intend to report to you my impressions, with the understanding that impressions often call for greater license than reason should allow.
