Let me say in conclusion that COPE may be regarded as the research structure, within the apparatus of psychoanalytic education in the American Psychoanalytic Association, which has as its subject the study and inventory-taking of psychoanalytic education. In that light, the intent of this report has not been to lay down a rigid series of final propositions on questions about which, like most research structures, COPE is groping its way forward. The goal of our research is improvement not in detail, but in fundamentals of the methodology of psychoanalytic education. Containing as it does the cream of the crop of psychoanalytic educators as its principal investigators, it seeks to employ flexible strategies by which the students' needs can be met in the total curriculum, according to the degree of insight and synthesis which their own analysis and their growing into the psychoanalysts that we hope to graduate will increasingly produce in them.
