The Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society celebrated the 50th anniversary of its inauguration on 14 and 15 April, 1958. The following members from abroad joined their Viennese colleagues for the occasion: Dr. Stepan Betlheim (Zagreb), Dr. Ulrich Ehebald (Hamburg), Dr. W. D. Groschitzky (Hamburg), Dr. Willi Hoffer (London), Dr. P. J. van der Leeuw (Amsterdam), Dr. F. Morgenthaler (Zurich), Dr. P. Parin (Zurich), Dr. Raymond de Saussure (Geneva), Dr. G. Scheunert (Berlin). The official celebration took place on 14 April under the chairmanship of the Honorary President, Dr. Alfred Winterstein, and in the presence of delegates of the Ministry for Social Welfare, of the University's Psychiatric Clinic, and of friends old and new of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society. Dr. Winterstein read a letter from Miss Anna Freud (London), in which she stressed the fact that the inauguration of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society fifty years ago was of more than local significance; it was the birth of the psycho-analytic movement, and its founder must have thought the time had come to give it public status and responsibilities. 'Fifty years seems a long span of time in the life of a human being, but in the life of science it is a short one. If we look back, it is impressive and almost incredible that psycho-analysis should have travelled round the world in this brief period and penetrated the thinking of men to the degree it has.' Anna Freud also congratulated Dr. Winterstein on his 50th anniversary as a member of the Vienna Society; 'I admit to some envy because I myself would have liked to achieve the same, and would have done so had not external events of grave significance interfered with my desire.'
The celebrations were followed by two days of discussion on training and training problems in Central Europe; as a result of these several decisions have been reached which will lead to an intensification and improvement of training methods and to joint action and exchange of tea
