The 37th International Psychoanalytical Congress, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Sunday, 28 July, to Friday, 2 August 1991, will be remembered as a landmark in the psychoanalytic movement because it was the first one to be held in Latin America. It was organized under the auspices of the four Argentinian Societies: the Asociaciòn Psicoanalìtica Argentina (APA); the Asociaciòn Psicoanalìtica de Buenos Aires (APdeBA); the Psychoanalytic Society of Mendoza and the Psychoanalytic Study Group of Cordoba, which became a Provisional Society during this Congress. The meetings were held at the Sheraton and Plaza Hotels under the patronage of the Argentinian Minister of Education, Mr Antonio Salonia.
The theme of the Congress was 'Psychic Change: Developments in the Theory of Psychoanalytic Technique'. The Programme Committee was chaired by Harold Blum (New York), and the Co-Chairs were Waldemar Zusman (Latin America) and Lore Schacht (Europe). Plaza de Ayala and Samuel Zysman.
The opening of the Congress was marked by a joint reception by the IPA and the host Societies, held at the Sheraton Hotel on Sunday, 28 July, and attended by over 3000 participants who enjoyed a magnificent dinner and dancing party. This was preceded by a toast offered by the IPA President and Executive Council to all the members of the various Sub-Committees of the Local Arrangements Committee.
