This was the first meeting of its kind and, like the meeting of the Liaison Officers, was intended to enhance communication between the Administration of the IPA and its member organizations. Its major purpose however was to provide a forum in which matters relating to educational standards and practices could be discussed with a view to improving the IPA's analytic training.
Initial discussion focused on the training analysis, and Dr Cooper, in the chair, reiterated the IPA's minimum requirement of four times weekly sessions of at least 45 minutes on different days. The meeting also considered ethical issues, financial problems (including restrictions imposed by insurance companies), difficulties experienced by candidates, and the methods of selecting training analysts, with particular reference to clinical merit as a criterion.
At the end of the meeting Dr Cooper outlined an agenda for the future; the appointment of a Committee on Psychoanalytic Education would enable regular meetings of Directors of Education to be held, whilst the group could also meet either during or before each Congress and in the years between Congresses. It was agreed that the next meeting should be for a half day focusing on one or two topics; relevant material would be circulated beforehand.
