Despite difficult economic circumstances and a recession in tourism to the UK, the Freud Museum has developed and expanded activities in all areas. Our reputation as a leading world centre for Freud studies increases by the year, and we continue to provide information and
research facilities for a growing number of scholars and the public. The number of visitors during 1992 was the highest for six years. Visitors continue to write enthusiastically of their experience of the Museum. Our priority continues to be to obtain funds which will create an endowment to secure the future of the Museum.
Conservation and Acquisitions: The generosity of Mrs Amy Cohen and her late husband, Saul, has enabled all the books in Freud's library to be furbished, cleaned and repaired. The most vulnerable or damaged books have been cased. A substantial number of books from the library of Dorothy Burlingham have been donated for the Museum's research library.
Loans: The antiquities which toured the USA returned to the Museum in April 1992. They had been exhibited at 13 locations and had attracted record audiences at a number of museums. Loans have been made to: 'Patterns of Jewish Life' for the Berlin festival; 'Stephan Zweig' in Salzburg and Munich. Over a hundred items have been loaned to an exhibition 'Le sphinx de Vienne' organised in collaboration with the Musée d'Ixelles in Brussels. Museums in the Netherlands, Switzerland and France have expressed an interest in showing this exhibition.
A series of seminars, 'Psychotherapy Black and White', was organised for professionals to discuss psychotherapy and ethnic communities, and was featured on national radio. 'Ecological Madness: Psychoanalysis and our Ecological Dilemmas' was the first conference of its kind to examine ecological issues in the light of psychoanalytic thought. 'Freud in England' the first in a series of educational booklets has been published, and a book on psychoanalysis and religion
