This book deals with one of the most extraordinary episodes in psychiatric history. LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide 25) is a derivative of ergot of rye and its psychotropic properties were discovered by chance in the Sandoz pharmaceutical laboratories during a study of the amides of lysergic acid. It is one of a group of -substances (including mescaline and psylocibin) which appear to act on the brain centres concerned with psychic defences and allow unconscious contents to emerge into consciousness.
