Dear Editor
It seems an appropriate time to give further news of P.A.N.D. As you will see, we have changed our name, not without discussion and some dissention, to one which was generally felt to be clearer and to take a more definite stand, while leaving room for differences.
The large ‘umbrella’ group has continued to meet in Central London, with workshops led by speakers from our own membership and from outside, including Joe Redfearn and Robert Young, and by the time this is read, Air-Commodore Mackie, recently elected Vice-Chairman of C.N.D. The local groups offer time and space to look at nuclear issues and support each other in outside activities.
We have also begun to run workshops. A highly successful workshop at the European Nuclear Disarmament Congress on the theme of ‘Thinking about the Unthinkable’, ‘Speaking about the Unspeakable’, where delegates were very appreciative of an opportunity to put words to their feelings, was followed by another on the same theme at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Annual Conference in Salford in November. Again delegates eagerly welcomed the space to share feelings and the workshop was so full that we had to turn people away. Members of P.A.N.D. attended the Scientists Against Nuclear Arms Conference in November and took part in a poster session with eye-catching posters which aroused a lot of interest. Individual members organised a one-day work-shop at Hatfield Polytechnic on ‘Human Destructiveness: The Jungian Contribution to the Nuclear Debate’, and have offered a one-term London University Extra-Mural course on ‘The Psychopathology of Nuclear War’.
We plan to continue this pattern of thinking and doing, acting and reflecting, and new members are always welcome. Our secretary can be contacted for further information on 01 928 5747.
