84 patients treated with individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the Adult Department of the Tavistock Clinic were followed up 3 to 9 years after the end of treatment. Adjustment level at intake and number of sessions were found to correlate with outcome. More specifically, capacity to relate and problem-solving ability were found to be predictive of outcome. The significance of the findings is discussed within the context of the debate concerning the efficacy of psychotherapy.
