This is a book I recommended to people during my recent visit to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Singapore. I feel it should be available in the non-professional libraries as it demonstrates the author's ‘continuity of concern’. The effect of this policy in her work has paid undoubted dividends in the lives of the children she treated. Perhaps the same could be said for her psychoanalytic colleagues. The value of intense study over a protracted period of time is often neglected today and regarded as a luxury rather than a sound investment for the future.
I also believe that the personality of the psychoanalyst is important. This book reflects Miss Hellman's personality - a sprightly individual of 80 years surrounded by young people and sharing not only wisdom and expertise but also a very real sense of humour and reality. Contributions are made by colleagues including Liselotte Frankl. Sadly she has died but is remembered with affection by those child patients with whom she worked with skill and care.
This collection of papers provides a valuable insight into the work of the Hampstead War Nurseries, the Anna Freud Centre and the Adolescent Study Group at the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic. The discerning reader will also be aware of the role of psychoanalysis in an important stage of development. Also the pioneer work of the individuals central to this process including Edward Glover, Anna Freud, Sylvia
