Dear Sir
Your readers might like to know that the European Association for Transcultural Group Analysis was set up in 1986 by a group of European psychoanalysts and group analysts who had been working together for some four years. It aims to promote research into the cultural foundations of groups and of personality, an area which has been relatively neglected, but is of pressing importance with the increase in social disruption through migration, and intercultural conflict.
Since its founding, the Association has organised intercultural workshops in Maastricht (Holland), Heidelberg (Germany) and in Oxford, in which many people have participated who work in the fields of mental health, education and training, organisational consultation, social and cultural work.
A first international Symposium will be held at the University of Bologna (Italy) from 16th to 18th April 1992. Experiences on the following themes will be presented and discussed: (1) effects on individuals and groups of changes in political and social systems, migration and intercultural conflict. (2) identity, identification and the cultural foundations of personality. (3) clinical and psychotherapeutic experiences in groups concerning these topics. (4) research in the inter- and trans-cultural fields.
There will be a main lecture each morning, with a text available in Italian, German, French and English, and separate discussion groups in each language. In the afternoon there will be shorter papers and discussion in any of these languages, and poster sessions. Offers of papers are invited to be sent to: Dr Jaak Le Roy, Koning Albertlaan 154, B-3360 Bierbeek, Belgium.
I will be happy to provide further information. (Address: 88 Montagu Mansions, London W1H 1LF.
