Dear Editor
We thought readers of your Journal would be interested to know that, in January 1992, a number of psychoanalytically oriented organisations met informally to consider the developments taking place in the UKSCP. They were concerned that the diversity of standards and trainings and the size of the Analytical Section (over 30 organisations) posed insuperable problems to the establishment of appropriately rigorous standards for trainings at all levels.
As a result of this meeting a Working Party was set up to make proposals for a new organisation and on 8th March The British Confederation of Psychotherapists was formed. It has now been agreed that the character of this organisation is best represented by the following sub-title: Psycho-Analysts, Analytical Psychologists and Psycho-Analytical Psychotherapists.
The aim of this organisation is to form a register of psychotherapists who have trained in one or other of these three related forms of psychotherapy and have been approved by the Registration and Ethics Committees of the BCP. These Committees are in the process of formulating standards. We hope to be in a position to publish a register, invite new organisations to apply and present a full report of the BCP's aims and constitution early in 1993.
