This paper starts by suggesting that ‘talking’ in the ‘talking cure’ is a relatively unexamined phenomenon in psychoanalysis. It then proposes a re-assessment of talking as an achievement from the interactional perspective of Jerome Bruner and his colleagues. This in turn, it is suggested, has interesting implications both for the notion of ‘cure’, and for the place and function of the analyst in the dynamics of the treatment.
