This paper addresses the meaning of psychological life before birth to later psychological experience as represented within the analytic process. The position is taken that residues of intra-uterine existence inevitably colour the internalisation of post-uterine experience. Imprints of prenatal relational patterns are brought into postnatal life as themes around which subsequent representations and imagoes are constructed. Echoes of prenatal motifs can be heard in the associations and modes of relatedness that are illuminated in the process of adult psychoanalysis. The experimental and theoretical literatures relevant to this premise are reviewed and clinical illustrations are provided.
