The Greenwich Consortium of Psychotherapists (GCP) is a group of psychoanalytic psychotherapists and analysts working within the Greenwich area of south-east London. The 10 council members come from a variety of backgrounds and trainings; all are UKCP members and some also belong to the BCP. Future members and associates will be welcomed from the wide membership base that forms the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Analytical Psychology sections of the UKCP, and the BCP.
GCP members work in private practice with adults, couples and children. Some also work within the health and education services as therapists; many members also teach aspects of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and psychology at postgraduate level in a number of universities and psychotherapy training organizations.
Members of the GCP share a keen awareness of the lack of high-quality psychoanalytic psychotherapy services for clients, trained practitioners and other professionals in south-east London. With the concentration of training organizations in north London, the majority of psychotherapists and analysts practise north of the Thames and thus most postgraduate opportunities for supervision, research, conferences and courses cluster in these areas. Not only is this inconvenient for travelling, it also takes practitioners away from their local community with its specific needs.
The GCP is aware of the need for a locally based organization that can respond to the demands of allied professions, by offering psychoanalytic psychotherapy perspectives and expertise from a position within the same community as the professionals themselves. This fosters a practical understanding of psychoanalytic psychotherapy while helping to integrate different ways of working. By offering courses and training within the community, the Greenwich Consortium of Psychotherapists hopes to encourage those working locally to attend training and workshops that would seem more remote, in both senses, if held outside the area.
