In a survey of 422 psychoanalysts, 287 (68 per cent) reported data regarding 1222 homosexual patients. The database was analysed in regard to variables relating to the outcome of analysis. Change to heterosexuality was associated with the analyst's expectation that such change will occur. Significant therapeutic benefit was associated with greater length of analysis. Female analysts reported greater therapeutic benefit with their female patients than did male analysts. Nearly two-thirds of patients received significant therapeutic benefit, without changing to heterosexuality. Higher rates of change were associated with higher rates of benefit for male patients. Greater analyst experience may also be important.
