This article is about the location of meaning and ‘truth’ in what our clients say. The concept of cover story is outlined and this is then applied to a ‘Freudian slip’. Various positions we take relative to the story are outlined. This is followed by three imaginary analyses by Freud, Laing and Lacan which demonstrate how the locus of truth can vary depending on our approach. The discussion of Lacan compares him favourably with many postmodernists, for whom the notion of truth has slipped away altogether.
