This paper considers Jane Austen's later novels in terms of a process towards emotional maturity. It conceives this specifically as the maturation of the capacity to love, and of the development of that capacity from narcissistic undifferentiation to true relatedness. The degree to which the object of love is seen as separate from and other to the self is seen as crucial in this evolution.
