The conclusions I have drawn from this paper are that Brian has a fragile ego structure in which primitive archetypal defences have not been mediated in his early relationships. His defences control terrifying outbursts of rage, feared abandonment and annihilation. These defences have left him dependent upon others and have restricted his life. I understand he has two main defence structures - a sadomasochistic split and a narcissistic structure. In Jungian terminology, he is caught in the grip of the negative mother complex, which impedes his development and leaves him a puer-aeternus.
Brian has not been able to free himself from his internalized parents whose marriage consists of mother who is a dominant, strong force, unable to tolerate aggressive and sexual messes. And father who is too passive to be able to help Brian untie the incestuous knot. Brian defends against a wish for and a terror of fusion with the mother. The male and female aspects of the psyche are held in a sado-masochistic pattern of relating. There is no interaction in either the internal or the external world that could lead to change. He is stuck in a dependent relationship with mother. He is either identified with her in fantasy, functioning as a sadistic aggressor alongside the terror of the cruel force of his penetrating aggression and the feared damage his ejaculation will cause. Or he splits off from his aggression and he can only make a mess that will result in abandonment, thus becoming his mother's impotent, masochistic son who longs for her reassuring holding (snake and teddy bear).
