Both rabbis and therapists are on the receiving end of powerful projections, particularly the availability of their bodies as an object of phantasy. Both sets of professionals are seen as a potential source of healing and judgement, and both are viewed as having access to some hard-to-name yet sought-after power (God/the unconscious) - yet both are essentially storytellers. The analyst's stories about countertransference can illuminate the emotional communication between two people, but may perhaps need to retain some humility in the face of the mystery that we are so much more than our means to know give us to know.
