The aim of this paper is to set out in sequence the evolution of Meltzer's ideas and the influence on them of Bion's. It has been the combination of his own explorations of the intrusive form of projective identification with the non-intrusive form in Bion's theory of thinking and with his theory of groups that came to define for Meltzer the essence of two of the three Post-Kleinian metapsychologies: ‘geographical and epistemological’ while in Bion's theory of affects he found the key to a third: the ‘aesthetic’.
