This paper examines ways in which Matte Blanco's ideas can be used to link psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural theories. The two approaches have developed independently but integrative thinking is becoming increasingly important. Psychodynamic concepts are used in some cognitive approaches and unconscious processes are a focus for academic psychology and neuroscience. Matte Blanco provides us with an alternative logic for the unconscious which can be used to develop the cognitive behavioural approach and provide links with understanding from the analytic tradition.
