It is a pleasure to announce the winning and commended papers in the Rozsika Parker Prize (p. 144), and to mark the distinctive place in the field that the BJP's competition, with its focus on creativity, has established. Benjamin Robinson's consideration of difficulty in the writing-up of clinical notes (Student Winner) and Sian Ellis's consideration of the translucent in supervision (Post-Qualification Winner) will be published in August this year; Ian Miller's consideration of Beckett in the context of psychoanalysis (Post-Qualification Commendation) will be published in November. Details of the competition are to be found on p. 278.
The second Clinical Commentary in our renewed, bi-annual series concerns a male patient ‘whose terror of growing up can provoke a profound sense of collapse from time to time’. This difficult and affecting material is both sensitively and at times challengingly explored by its three discussants.
The three papers in our core section, Clinical and Theoretical Practice, reflect the increasingly international reach of the BJP. Grazyna Czubinska (London) suggests that ‘the psychic work of emigration can be understood as a process of integrating splits between pre- and post-migration selves’ and, via discussion of a mutual enactment in a case history, that the analyst needs to allow herself to be a ‘real person’ in work with this patient group. Paula Collens and Francie Van Hout (Auckland, NZ) explore supervision as a ‘relational space where uncertainty and conflict can be born/e and given new meanings’, basing their paper on more than twenty years of work in higher education contexts. Dorit Lemberger (Ramat Gan, Israel), from a philosophical perspective, considers ‘the relationship between the role played by language in the constitution of the subject and how it functions in the process of communication between therapist and patient’. These are intricate papers, inviting careful reading and rereading.
