Qualified in medicine and then psychiatry at the Royal Free Hospital. She is a fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. For more than 20 years, until 2010, she worked as a consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy at the Portman Clinic (Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust), from which she consulted to various medium secure units and prisons, and then to the high-security Broadmoor Hospital (2003-8). She also built up a private psychoanalytic practice in Kew that continues. She has written journal papers on puerperal breakdown and the menopause, and on firesetting and homosexuality. She has also written chapters on murderousness, group psychotherapy for offenders and prison visiting, and a book on female sexuality (2018).
